3 Paragraphs

Paragraph 1
Look at the effects of fossil fuels and compare them to the use of alternative fuels. Then look at other ways of obtaining energy and their effects on the environment.
Thesis: The immense consumption and release of fossil fuels into the atmosphere need to be addressed and alternative forms of obtaining energy be found in order to prolong the existence of our Earth's environment for future generations.

Paragraph 2
The sources that I am using now have allowed me to find adequate information on my topic, so far. All of them have been giving background information on fossil fuels and their uses and why we still use them today. Then again other source are showing that renewable energy are just as good as a source of energy just with a few downsides but not as many negatives as the ways we are doing things right now. I feel like I'm going to need to look at more in depth and specific topics and compare the use of say solar energy to the use of burning coal, to come up with an effective argument on my topic.

Paragraph 3
So far Im starting to see that it is harder to differentiate between just the general speculation of saying that fossil fuels are bad for the environment and that green energy is 100% good. Most articles are many one sided and biased towards on or another. But Im finding some success in the information I need to be gathering. To help avoid this problem I am going to do specific research on the different methods of obtaining energy like just buying coal or drilling for natural gas. Then formulate a specific position of my own in order to reduce the amount of bias given by the articles and sources I'm using right now.

     I picked this article because its gives a good basis for what the definition of energy is and how it is obtained. It explains the process of going into the earth and getting fossil fuels and the controversy about it. As well as giving a good supporting argument for green energies.

     This article just tells the reader what exactly fossil fuels are so it should provide some solid facts about coal and oil. But also I like the way it was formatted and showed some very good diagrams explaining the process. Another cool thing was showing the energy outputs of all the major countries, such as India, China, and the US.

     In this article is showed a lot about how the green world of energy interacts with everything else. It showed how to obtain green energy and what you can do to help with it also. So I thought it could help out a lot with explain to people what exactly renewable energy is without just boring them and teaching them what they already know.

     What I thought was useful in looking at this article was how it shows both sides of the energy world and compared renewable to burning coal and oil. Since oil and coal have been used for more than 100 years it seems to be outdated but still in use. It should provide a nice basis for an argument to make in my paper.

     This article is similar to my 4th resource but it gives a little different perspective on the argument with some more statistics involved so I can have more points to make in my paper. But it does have nice graphs that shows stats on the energy output of each type of method, such as coal vs solar and other things like that. So I mainly like it for that reason and thought it would be very helpful when comparing the two in my paper.

Research Topics

1. The unquenched thirst for wealth of big corporations
       I think that would be a good topic because it is something that interests me very much since I cannot stand how big companies can sit there and complain that they don't make 100 million when they make 50 million. And how 10% of Americans do not have a job right now and cannot provide for their family. It seems illogical to how people can always want more money when they make a handful that pays the bills and still have enough left over to buy luxury items. But more than just money the human race itself is never satisfied with anything they do, they always want to have more....

2. The effects of fossil fuels on the environment in comparison to green energy
     This topic is done many times over but it is still a very pressing matter since we only have 1 earth and when its gone, its gone for good. Things such as even buying a water filter can make a huge difference in the plastic output for a family consumed every year. Currently there are many new cutting edge means of getting energy than just burning coal and other fossil fuels that put harmful chemicals into the atmosphere that eat through our ozone layer.

Thesis and Ad

Through the years Marlboro has been portrayed as the "masculine" brand of cigarettes through their clever advertising of using cowboys to promote their products, but in this image it shows even the "manliest" of men can show empathy and remorse after years of smoking Marlboro's tobacco products.

I like to argue

Through out todays society it is well known that humans are quite shallow people and that people expectations of how a person should be physically "beautiful" is an almost impossible feat, and can lead to destroying peoples lives. People in the United States in pre-fastfood seemed to be very fit and muscular, but as it seem in recent years the average body fat percentage has been raised on an exponential scale. Due to the major fast-food chains such as McDonalds and Wendys, they have single handedly caused a huge upraise in the health of Americans. Lobbyists for these corporations say that they aren't forcing the food down their customers throats, but if you get in your car and take a ride down the street there will be at least 1 fast-food place every mile, if that. If that isn't clear enough every fast-food place has the use of yellow, red, or orange and these colors have been proven to encourage appetite, once again the marketing camping in designed around getting the average person to consume their heart attack on a bun.
While opening up a magazine there will be countless ads of these "beautiful women and men showing off some product that will magically make you more attractive or help lose weight. Every person is always looking for that extra boost in confidence to seem more attractive to the opposite sex. In turn believing that if they purchase this product it will do that for them. This is where the marketing campaign board makes there paycheck, by getting inside the head of their target market.
Even in cartoons for kids the characters are never out of shape and are disproportionate to what they would actually look like in real life. For instance, the barbie doll has a very small waste, abnormally long legs and neck, not to mention her bigger than average chest. The book does a good job of depicting this very well in a real life photo of what the Barbie doll would look like compared to a super model, and its not good.

Nike Shoes


The long-lived Nike brand has made years of durable and eye catching shoes through their effective advertising campaigns that use rhetoric to draw in the target consumers.

From the Stars

When i saw this photo of the nike tennis shoe it instantly caught my eye due to the bright colors on the front of the shoe. When you first look at the shoe it looks somewhat like a firework or some kind of star, etc. Then when you take a closer look you can see that under the nike swoosh it says "meteors". So the shoe was designed to look like a meteor falling out of the sky. The burning colors on the front and the star trail on the back are a dead give away to what the ad is trying to do by grabbing  your attention. Even with the black background looking like the night sky, adds to the effect of the entire meteor scheme. The Pathos of this ad can be somewhat like its creating the feeling of amazement, such as this shoe is out of this world and its some kind of crazy new technology or alien object. All of the shoe is highlighted and stands out to the naked eye trying to appeal to your eyes. Its gives off the feeling that this is something thats not the ordinary shoe, it is something new and hot. But when you think about the Ethos of this ad, immediately its false because a shoe can't be falling from outter space and isn't a meteor. Still though it is a clever advertisement and the colors play of each other every well. But a shoe coming from Nike does have a lot of credibility due to the companies long existence, they are obviously doing some then right. The shoe must be very durable and comfortable even though its not from the cosmos. When you think about Logos in this ad theres not much to say because the ad is basing the shoe of a meteor and its not possible but then again it would be logical to buy a shoe that would be from out of this world. Overall this ad does appeal to the ordinary person and is a clever idea with the "meteor" scheme on the black "sky" background. I would have to say it is well done by Nike, and I personally like how they lit up the O in the meteors to look like a star. 

Visuals Around Campus

after reading the pages in the book it really started to get me thinking about all of the things around campus that i never paid attention to. now looking back on it everything that is in my view has the intentions of changing my opinion on something in the world. as in coming up to my dorm i see signs about not drinking and doing the right thing. before reading this section i knew how big time companies always try to subconsciously make u choose their products whether it be through a commercial or ad in a magazine. for instance most fast food companies will have the colors red orange or yellow bc those colors tend to make the mass majority of people feel hungry. but on the other hand it can be more obvious than that like bolded letters in a textbook indicating vocab words. it gives you an uneasy feeling knowing that literally everything there is in life is trying to make u think a certain way. makes me think that is there anything i really do thats all my own decision, which obviously it is but it still is crazy. i personally think that if a person has the knowledge to make a person or group of people think what they intend for them to do has some impressive abilities under their belt. well thats all for now, i guess till the next blog session.
